Join us to celebrate the first exhibition in the Calder & Lawson Gallery for 2019, Tōku Reo, Tōku Ohooho: Taonga Pūoro Showcase.

Tōku Reo, Tōku Ohooho: Taonga Pūoro Showcase will present visual and performance art, workshops and presentations inspired and informed by the practice of traditional Māori instruments, taonga pūoro. Curated by artist Regan Balzer, this showcase reflects on the journey of the revival of taonga pūoro, from the early days of the Haumanu Collective with pioneers such as Hirini Melbourne, Richard Nunns, & Brian Flintoff, to the more recent developments and utilisation of taonga pūoro in contemporary artworks. The exhibition will feature taonga from the University of Waikato’s taonga pūoro and fine art collection complemented with the work of contemporary artists.

The night will begin with a karanga at 5:30pm to welcome guests into the exhibition space. Please note there will be a cash bar for alcoholic drinks. Please RSVP to art.curator@waikato.ac.nz for catering purposes.
