Dr Lucy Hone, Director of the New Zealand Institute of Wellbeing and Resilience, and a research associate at AUT, will give a two-part presentation at Waikato Management School on Thursday, 21 November.
This event is proudly hosted by the New Zealand Institute for Business Research and is open to all staff, students, and members of the public.
Dr Hone works with a diverse range of organisations across New Zealand to design and implement wellbeing and resilience initiatives. She will share strategies and experiences for promoting wellbeing at a personal, team and organisational level.
The author of several books and articles on resilience, including the best-selling book What Abi Taught Us (2016), Dr Hone is well known for fusing her first-hand experience of trauma, loss and resilience with the strategies and tools coming from her research. She is very much in demand as a keynote speaker.
As well as having her scientific research published in leading academic journals internationally, she writes for the Sunday Star Times and Psychology Today. Having been trained by thought leaders in wellbeing and resilience at the University of Pennsylvania, she completed her PhD in public health at AUT.
12 noon - 1pm: PART ONE: Resilience: What is it? And how can we promote it in ourselves and others

As a resilience researcher, it’s my job to know the ways of thinking and acting that help people come back from trauma. What I had done for others I now had to do for my family and for myself.”
If you’ve ever wondered what the words 'resilience' and 'wellbeing' really mean, and how you can help yourself, your friends, family, colleagues and workplace be more resilient, then this session is for you.
The objectives of this session are:
- An understanding of what resilience and wellbeing actually are and why they’re so important in today’s world
- Practical, evidence-based ways to foster your own resilience
- Ways of thinking and acting that have been shown to reduce depression, stress and anxiety and boost happiness, confidence and hope
1.30pm - 2.30pm: PART 2: An Introduction to the Science and Importance of Psychological Wellbeing
In general, New Zealanders are more satisfied with their lives than the OECD average for developed countries. While this is great news, it tells us very little about New Zealanders’ psychological health.
The OECD Better Life Index only measures one dimension of wellbeing, which is at odds with psychological research indicating that wellbeing is multi-dimensional.
Against the backdrop of the New Zealand government's increased emphasis on ‘wellbeing’, Dr Lucy Hone, who is part of the team that devised the Sovereign NZ Wellbeing Index, will share her insights regarding the importance of psychological wellbeing.
Taking an ecological model approach, Dr Hone will share strategies and experiences in promoting wellbeing at the personal, team and organisational level.
