Based on a recent research paper, visiting fellow Kaisa Huhta's seminar talk explores the nexus between climate and energy law. It argues that sustainable development and, decarbonization in particular, require legal scholarship to expose the interrelationships between climate and energy law and to identify and critically evaluate the frictions and the similarities in the nexus between the two disciplines. The research maps the origins of climate and energy law to demonstrate how they have evolved side by side, guided by separate legal rationales and distinct legislative developments yet sharing partially overlapping objectives. By comparing climate and energy law as legal disciplines, the research identifies attributes that characterize the interface between climate and energy law and explains how these attributes can both facilitate and restrict global decarbonization goals.
