Little is known about the persistence of feral honey bee colonies in NZ or the impact that feral colonies may have on managed honey bees and/or native flora and fauna. Over the next 3-5 years we aim to map the nest sites of feral honey bee colonies and the locations of several mating sites in at least two focal areas of native bush. This work carries on from research conducted on feral and managed honey bee populations in the United States and is being conducted in collaboration with graduate and undergraduate students at the University of Waikato.
