Over recent decades, Aotearoa/New Zealand’s migration system has become increasingly complex as government’s have focused on managing migrants and restricting the characteristics of who can live in Aotearoa/New Zealand permanently. These migration policy and regulation developments are actively creating inequalities between migrants and non-migrants, as well as within migrant populations themselves. This presentation examines how Aotearoa/New Zealand’s migration policies create inequalities, particularly in relation to temporary migration, and asks whether there are avenues for more equitable approaches to controlling migration.
Professor Francis L. Collins is a geographer with interests in migration and urban research; he is also the current Director of the National Institute of Demographic and Economic Analysis. His recent and ongoing research includes examinations of temporary educational and labour migration in Aotearoa/New Zealand, workplace exploitation of temporary migrants, diversity policies and practices in healthcare settings, and the migration of New Zealanders to Australia. Francis is the author of Global Asian City: migration, desire and the politics of encounter in 21st Century Seoul (Wiley 2018); and co-editor of Intersections of Inequality, Migration and Diversification: the politics of mobility in Aotearoa/New Zealand (Palgrave 2019); Aspirations, Desire and the Drivers of Migration (Routledge 2019); and Migration and Diversity in Asian Contexts (ISEAS 2013).
